Despite the age, for many African-American women living the "single life" is very much a reality. While the reasons may vary, this is especially true for those women who are professionals. You know, the women who appear to have it all when it comes to their careers. For most of these women, having it "all" comes at a price, then the age old question comes to mind: is it going to be a successful career or a happy family? Of course, this is 2011, but let's be real, just as much as we see teen pregnancies, we also see single, successful women of all ages without any children. To this very day, I still wreck my brain trying to figure out if you can truly have both. Most of the time, it comes down to sacrifice, which one is most important at a particular time in your life?
It's not as if single women can escape this reality that is harsh for some, because there are constant reminders everywhere. It's the topic of phone conversations, talk show discussions, it's all the rage on social networking sites, and it's played out in movies and now on VH1's new series, "Single Ladies." Just two weeks ago, the telling series premiered, stirring up quite a bit of conversation.
The first thing I thought was that the series is definitely an example of art imitating life. With a star-studded cast of beautiful actors/actresses, "Single Ladies" is one show that has the ability to have some promise. As much as the story lines can be a bit far-fetched, at the core, it all makes sense. Unfortunately, I'm sure viewers can actually relate. The point is made that women, especially African-American women, are single for their own individual reasons.
Logically, you would assume that the older you get, the easier a lot of things would be, but that seems to be so far from the truth, especially when it comes to relationships. One thing is for sure, as much energy that is put into talking about being single and trying to analyze your "status," that same energy could be channeled towards being productive in that same area. Maybe the issue is that most women would rather "talk" about it opposed to being about it.

Are Children Growing Up Too Fast?

The day I returned to my hometown, I was amazed at the sight of my 7-year-old brother playing with his Nintendo DSi. I tried to be the cool, older sister. So, I decided to share my gadget owning days in an effort to relate. Back in the day, I had a Gameboy Color and a Polaroid i-Zone. I went on and on about my experiences and to my surprise, he interrupted my story with a click of a button. My photograph was taken instantly and morphed right onto the screen. He made my image look deformed, laughed, and said, “Ice, I’m gonna put you on YouTube.” I wondered, how in the world does he know about YouTube? Furthermore, how does he know about blackmail? More importantly, why does he have internet access?! He’s only seven!

Not too long after the run in with my younger brother, we both met up with our six-year-old sister. She wasn't flashing pictures in an effort to blackmail me, but she was having a fit about her Nintendo DSi battery dying. “I need to connect to Jordan,” she said. I was confused. It was mind bottling that they were so comfortable with technology, like mini experts.
Here I am, a 20-year-old college student with a box full of stuffed animals, trolls, and notes, while my younger siblings are already concerned with social networks and video games. I can’t be too upset, because unlike most children their age, they still play outside for hours. As long as they still get fresh air and a chance to use their imagination, I’m okay with them having a blast playing Mario. I mean, all I got were board games, cheap graphics, and plastic.

Another “Hangover”

Prior to this past Memorial Day weekend, many people waited, for what seemed like forever, to see the highly-anticipated sequel to "Hangover." Last week, the wait was over, as people all over the country crowded movie theaters with the hope that this sequel could live up to the original.
Let’s be honest, it’s hard to compete with an original, especially if the original was so good. In this case, "Hangover" is one movie that will go down as a classic when it comes to comedies. So, when word got out that there would be a part two, people were definitely excited about it, even if they had reservations.
This spring alone, we’ve seen the same story lines done over and over again in movies like "Scream 4" and "FastFive." Somehow, viewers just keep coming back for more, even when they know the outcome. Whether you had high expectations for "Hangover 2" or not, you have to admit that it did a pretty good job considering what is was up against.
Although the story line is almost the same, the location changes, which adds a different element. The fact that the same actors return is a plus, as well. Without giving too much away, each actor takes his character to the next level, while staying true to himself. Bradley “Phil” Cooper adds the looks and the same serious, yet comical relief. Ed “Stu” Helms is still quirky. Zach “Allen” Galifianakis brings everything to the movie, and without him, it just wouldn’t be the same. Justin “Doug” Bartha plays a small role in this one, but he’s still just as responsible as you remember.
In just one week, "Hangover 2" grossed more than $200 million. This is one sequel that is definitely a must-see.

Chicago: Summer, Summer, Summertime!

This is my first summer in Chicago, and I have to say I'm pretty excited. There are a lot of things to do during the summer and the best part about it is that a lot of activities are free! Here are a few activities that you may want to keep in mind:
The Chicago Blues Festival
The Chicago Blues Festival is the largest free blues festival in the world and remains the largest of Chicago's music festivals. Taking place in Grant Park the weekend of June 10, the festival will bring a variety of performances, which occur for about eight hours each day during the event. Previous performers include Bonnie Raitt, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Bo Diddley, and Koko Taylor.
Taste of Chicago
The Taste of Chicago is the nation's premier outdoor food festival showcasing the diversity of Chicago's dining community. Taking place in Grant Park, the Taste also has music and various activities for the entire family. For now, admission is free, but the food will cost you. With 59 restaurants participating, four of the city’s annual lakefront music festivals incorporated into the Taste, and a giant turtle sandbox from Target, it seems like this is one event you don't want to miss.
Visiting the Beach
If overcrowded events aren't your thing, you may want to indulge in a favorite past time. Since the weather is finally getting warmer, you can have a relaxing day at the beach. With 24 beaches in the Chicagoland area, I'm sure you can find one that's just right for you. It’s a way to have fun with your friends and family, or you can go solo and enjoy a good book.

Memorial Day: Food, Family, Fun and So Much More

As one of the most anticipated weekends approaches, many people in America are planning to spend time with family and friends, while enjoying some barbeque. Most people see this holiday as an opportunity to party or at the very least have fun, because the summer can officially begin. While Memorial Day is all that, it happens to be much more. So, as you’re planning that vacation to a warm climate or planning the menu where there’s no shortage of ribs, chicken, and potato salad, keep in mind where it all started.
Now, we all know that Memorial Day is always the last Monday in May and the word “memorial” gives way to its history. So, you don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know that it’s a special day for one reason and one reason only: to honor the men and women who died while serving their country.
Following the Civil War, it became a tradition to decorate the graves of those who died; thus, it was originally called, “Decoration Day.” It wasn’t until 1971 when Memorial Day became an official holiday. It’s 40 years later and cemeteries all over the country are filled with love, people are planning gatherings, and just like some other holidays we love so much, parades will line the streets.
So, while you’re enjoying yourself this weekend in celebration of those who fought and died for your country, take a second and remember where it all started. Oh, and don’t forget that Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day are different in the fact that the latter honors all veterans, living and dead.

Heating Up the Summer with Some New Tunes

There are a handful of anticipated albums this summer, yet I feel so out of touch! Maybe it’s because the albums that peek my interest aren’t scheduled to be released until fall; or maybe it’s, because I’m too picky. Whatever the reason, I still would like to be able to keep up with each and every dope release, whether it's a mix-tape, a single, or an entire album.
I have to say the Beastie Boys' "Hot Sauce Committee Part Two" is definitely a must-have this summer. The much-anticipated album is finally here with 16 tracks. If you can’t respect the group as icons in Hip Hop, you could at least agree that their tribute, "Fight For Your Right Revisited," starring Seth Rogen, Elijah Wood, and Will Ferrell, was not only visually stimulating but hella cool.
Then, there’s Big Sean's "Finally Famous," which fans will have to wait a little bit longer to hear. Once again, its release was pushed back a week, but it's now due sometime in June. With features from Wiz, Pharrell, and Kanye, I might have to reassess my opinion about him and his music. We have a love-hate relationship, but he’s talented, and he has potential.
Finally, there's all this buzz swirling around some of the best in the game. From Drake's "Take Care" to Rick Ross's "God Forgives, I Don't," this summer will definitely heat up. Not to mention, there's Lil Wayne's "The Carter IV" and Jay Z and Kanye's "Watch the Throne."
While 2010 gave us so many new artists, as well as new tracks, 2011 has to step up to the plate. All we can do now is wait patiently.

“Two Hearts, One God. Should Anything Else Matter?”

Zora & Nicky by Claudia Mair Burney is probably one of the realest books I've read in a long time about race and religion.
Zora Nella Hampton, an African-American woman and a pastor’s child, has practically everything any girl would want: the hottest designer clothes, a degree from Spelman, a nice car, and a hot boyfriend. Unfortunately, these luxuries come at a price. It’s her father’s way of keeping her under his thumb. He ignores her love for painting, art, and her old ways of her grandfather’s church. Her “privileged” life has left her feeling like she has lost God. She wants Him back.
Nicky Parker, a Caucasian male and a pastor's child, is a recent Berkeley graduate and a reformed playboy. Him and his father, a Caucasian, racist, southern-baptist pastor, don’t get along.
When Zora and Nicky see each other at bible study, there's an instant attraction, but both remain on the defense. However, they can’t seem to stop thinking about each other.
When I read this book it was so hard to put it down. The complicated (and I mean complicated) love story of Zora and Nicky was so beautiful! Neither experienced an interracial relationship before, and this book explores the many thoughts that go through their heads when it comes to their relationship. Although the book has a lot of Christian values sprinkled throughout, the author doesn't hold anything back with Zora and Nicky’s feelings for each other.
I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a good love story with so much more to it.
